About Sol de Maíz

Rooted in Memory. Created for Resistance.

Sol de Maíz is an independent art studio founded by artist Joel Cornejo. Through prints, posters, apparel, and visual storytelling, the studio explores memory, identity, culture, land, and the enduring spirit of Indigenous peoples.

Inspired by ancestral teachings, community, and the living traditions of Turtle Island, each piece is created as an offering to the stories that continue to shape who we are and who we may become.

The artwork of Sol de Maíz draws from Indigenous symbolism, historical memory, community struggle, spirituality, and cultural continuity. Through bold imagery and accessible forms, the studio seeks to create art that can live not only in galleries, but also in homes, community centers, classrooms, and everyday spaces.

About the Artist

Joel Cornejo is a Xochimilca artist, organizer, educator, and cultural worker based in Arizona.

Born in Mexico City and raised between cultures, Joel’s work is shaped by migration, Indigenous identity, community organizing, and the preservation of ancestral memory. His artistic practice draws inspiration from the traditions of his Xochimilca lineage, the histories of Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island, and the everyday resilience of working-class communities.

For more than a decade, Joel has worked alongside migrant, Indigenous, and barrio communities, helping build spaces dedicated to culture, education, collective care, and community defense. These experiences continue to influence his artwork, which often explores themes of memory, resistance, spirituality, land, family, and cultural survival.

Through Sol de Maíz, Joel seeks to create artwork that honors those who came before us while contributing to the stories that future generations will inherit.

He believes that art carries responsibility. It preserves memory, strengthens identity, sparks dialogue, and reminds us that resistance can be found not only in moments of struggle, but also in acts of creation, remembrance, and love.

Our Vision

Sol de Maíz exists to create meaningful artwork rooted in culture, memory, and community.

Every piece is an invitation to remember, to learn, and to reconnect with the stories that continue to live within us.

Thank you for supporting independent art.
