LOS GUERREROS DEL MAÍZ

This piece comes from a children’s story I’ve been writing called Los Guerreros del Maíz.

The story follows a group of small maize warriors who learn that true strength is found in community, courage, responsibility, and caring for one another.

Part of the inspiration came from watching the explosion of collectible toy crazes like Labubu and the industries built around them. I began thinking about how corporations spend billions creating characters designed to capture children’s attention, shape their desires, and turn imagination into consumption.

I don’t blame the children.

I question a system that teaches children to build relationships with brands before they build relationships with their own histories, cultures, communities, and lands.

Los Guerreros del Maíz is my response.

What would it look like if our children grew up with characters rooted in memory instead of marketing? In community instead of consumption? In responsibility instead of endless collecting?

These little maize warriors carry that question.

For me, maize has always represented more than food. It represents our relationship to the earth, our ancestors, and the generations yet to come. These characters remind us that even the smallest among us can help protect culture, memory, and the future.

This artwork captures the three main characters standing together beneath the sun, ready for whatever journey lies ahead.
